Broad Bean
"La Galette des Rois" (means King pastry) is a French round pastry to celebrate the Epiphany in Christian calendar. In France this pastry is sold everywhere in early January and it is a seasonal tradition to eat this pastry with family or friends. In this pastry there is a little ceramic doll or some figure called gle feveh (means broad bean originally because in old days a broad bean was used instead of a ceramic item). This ceramic item is a lucky symbol, and if you get a piece with, you are the king! Well, one day I almost broke my front teeth but I happened to be that lucky person. Therefore I got this little white ceramic piece which I didnft know what to do with it after but I didnft feel like to throw my lucky symbol away immediately (as I was lucky enough not to broke my front teeth even I bit the hard ceramic) so I put it in my purse as a kind of my usual provisional solution,so to speak. However, since then this ceramic piece lives in my purse! In Japan we do not have this seasonal tradition of course, but recent years I started to see this pastry in showcases at some of the pastry stores in Tokyo. The filling of the pastry is almond cream so in order to show you the size of the ceramic I took a picture with an almond.
