The Tibetan Buddhist prayer wheel is carried by pilgrims. It has inscribed on it the mantra 'Om Mani Padme Hum', which is an invocation to Chenrezig, the embodiment of Compassion. The mantra is also printed in thousands, on paper inside the body of the wheel. My Grandmother and her friends carry these wheels when on pilgrimage. They turn the wheel to invoke the mantra to receive the dharma of the Buddha. When they are not on pilgrimage, these wheels sit on a shrine in their homes.
